Six of the most beloved writers in young adult literature are collaborating on a novel-in-stories that aims to celebrate Black love, Entertainment Weekly reports.

1Angie Thomas, Nicola Yoon, Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nic Stone have written Blackout, which HarperCollins imprint Quill Tree Books describes as an “interlinked novel of charming, hilarious, and heartwarming stories that shine a bright light through the dark.”

The book, written during the Covid-19 quarantine, is set during a summer heatwave blackout in New York. “When the lights go out, people reveal hidden truths,” the publisher says. “Love blossoms, friendship transforms, and new possibilities take flight.”

“The secret is out!” Clayton wrote on Twitter. “We wrote a novel together called BLACKOUT set during a NYC heatwave. Our love letter to love. Our reminder to Black kids that they deserve a love story.”

“There is no fiercer form of rebellion than telling love stories about kids who are often told they’re unworthy of them at a time like the one we’re living in," Stone told Entertainment Weekly. “Blackout was a balm to all of our souls while writing it, and we hope it'll be equally as healing to readers.”

Blackout is slated for publication on June 22, 2021.
